Ceramic or porcelain tiles? We help you to choose

Whilst making a selection from the huge variety of tile shapes, sizes, colours and designs is largely a personal style preference, many of our customers are often unaware of the differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles.

As tile retailers, one of the most frequent questions that we are asked is "what's the difference between porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles?"

Broadly speaking, both ceramic and porcelain tiles can be used on walls and floors, though as we shall see there are certain practical factors to consider before making the right choice.

Whilst ceramic and porcelain tiles may look the same, porcelain tiles are denser than ceramic products. This means that porcelain tiles are much more durable and hardwearing and are suitable for use both indoors and outside.

Porcelain tiles are made from a slightly different type of clay, kaolin and also flint and feldspar, which is an important distinction when considering if the tiles will be used in flooring. Porcelain tiles are also fired at a higher temperature and for a longer time. The tiles' enhanced durability means that, as a flooring material, they can be used in all areas, from light traffic through to heavy domestic and commercial use.

Ceramic tiles are usually finished with a durable glaze, which holds the tile's colour and pattern. They are easier to cut than porcelain tiles and are more suited to areas with light to moderate traffic. Like porcelain tiles they are easy to clean and long-lasting.

One of our most popular porcelain tiles is the versatile Byzantium Stone range – its subtle elegance makes it ideal for a traditional or contemporary interior. The honeyed tones of these stone-effect tiles make them a perfect choice to make their own statement, while complementing interior design.

Our Desert ceramic tiles are available in a muted palette of grey and cream with a choice of subtle shading with a pearl finish or mosaic pattern. Perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, these easy clean tiles will make a striking addition to any design.

Another particularly popular range is Brescia, from our porcelain wood collection. These stylish tiles are a practical choice as they combine all the easy-care benefits of a tile with the natural beauty of wood. The Brescia wood-effect porcelain tiles are available in rich dark tones as well as lighter and more subtle shades from pale grey to a light sand-washed tone. These tiles will enhance any décor, making a real style statement.
